Digital Health Seminar Series: Henry Glyde
Predicting COPD Exacerbations Using Real-World Digital Health Data: Lessons from Wearables and Symptoms
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are a major cause of hospitalisation, but advances in digital health offer new ways to predict deterioration.
Dr Henry Glyde and colleagues used daily data from the myCOPD app (including symptoms, CAT scores, and wearable activity data) to model short-term risk, achieving stable predictive performance. This talk will share methodological insights and introduce FORESEE-COPD, an open platform for personalised, proactive COPD care using wearable, symptom, and environmental data.
Bio: Dr Henry Glyde is a Research Associate in the Academic Respiratory Unit, University of Bristol, and an NIHR Bristol BRC Postdoctoral Fellow. His research integrates AI, digital health, and respiratory medicine to develop predictive models for COPD using wearable, symptom, and environmental data.

LEAP Community Sandpit
As part of our Digital Health Community Innovators scheme, we’ll be hosting an in-person Community Sandpit event in Bristol this November.
This interactive session will bring together our successful Community Innovators, who will present the challenges they’re exploring. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions around these challenges, with the aim of forming diverse project teams that combine lived experience, technical expertise, and community insight.
Participants in the Sandpit may come from a range of backgrounds, including academia, industry, the NHS, social care, health charities, and community organisations – anyone with an interest in contributing to challenge-led, lived experience–driven research.
Please note that the challenges will be defined by the Community Innovators; there will not be an opportunity to present new challenges at the event.
Attendance will be by application only, to ensure a balanced mix of participants. While we welcome all expressions of interest, places are limited and cannot be guaranteed.
Teams formed at the Sandpit will be invited to apply for £10,000 seedcorn funding to further investigate and develop their chosen challenge.

Interpreting AI Solutions for Healthcare: An In-Person Workshop
Hub Researchers in Residence Miquel Perello Nieto and Nawid Keshtmand will lead this workshop on explainable AI for critical decision making and for health care applications.
AI is increasingly being integrated into healthcare, transforming clinical decision-making, diagnostics, and patient care. While AI-driven tools offer significant potential benefits—including efficiency, predictive analytics, and personalized medicine—their use also raises critical concerns.
This workshop aims to demystify key AI concepts, including Machine Learning and Large Language Models, to equip attendees with a more informed and critical perspective.
We will explore both the promise and the pitfalls of AI in clinical practice, discussing issues such as dataset bias, privacy, fairness, accountability, and contestability. By highlighting real-world examples and ethical considerations, this session will provide the knowledge needed to engage with AI tools responsibly and avoid the risks of over-reliance or blind trust.
The workshop is for anyone interested in getting an introduction to AI, how some models can be used for critical decision making, and how to interpret their outputs including various tools.

A Crash Course in Human-Computer Interaction for Digital Health: An In-Person Workshop
Hub Researcher in Residence Emily Nielsen will lead this 2 hour workshop on HCI for digital health.
Emily will be be unpacking what user-centred design and human-computer interaction looks like within the area of digital health.
This workshop covers the basic principles of HCI and requires no pre-requisite understanding. It will introduce the design cycle within HCI design and what each stage brings to the design of digital health interventions.
It will explore methods to understand your user groups and context. Then it will cover design principles for prototyping, and the importance and impact of involving users. Finally, it will briefly outline methods for evaluation that differ to other disciplines.
The workshop is primarily aimed at health researchers and would be beneficial for people working in digital health who are unfamiliar with HCI approaches.
