About the schemes

LEAP HDR UK Black Internship Programme

The Health Data Science Black Internship Programme is in a milestone fifth year, with over 300 interns completing the programme so far.

Host organisations usually fund the placement costs however the Hub is funding a limited number of placements in 2025.

Who can host?

  • The scheme aims to showcase the breadth of roles within the health data sector. We welcome hosts from academia, business, civil service, medical research charities and NHS bodies
  • To host LEAP funded places, organisations must have some connection to LEAP either as an existing network partner or through alignment with the Hub’s vision
  • Organisations will need to be able to meet the Black Internship Programme host requirements (outlined below)

Black Internship Programme host organisation requirements:

  • Obtain organisational permission to host interns
  • Let us know about logistical requirements in our pledge form
  • Carry out interviews – (HDR UK will screen and match applicants for you)
  • Conduct Right To Work in the UK checks
  • Create an 8-week health data project for your intern(s)
  • Provide a laptop if needed for your intern(s)

LEAP PhD Fellowships

In 2025, the Hub will be launching a PhD Fellowship scheme. This scheme is aimed at PhD students who are looking to undertake a placement with industry, NHS / public sector, or third sector organisation in order to further their development in Digital Health. We have funding available to support organisations to host PhD students for placements during the Fellowship period.

Who can host?

    • We welcome hosts from academia, industry, VCSEs (voluntary, community and social enterprise including charities, CIOs and CICs) and NHS bodies
    • Hosts will need to have a Digital Health project for the PhD Fellow to work on during a 2-4 month placement (2-3 months full time, 2-4 months part time)
    • To host LEAP funded places, organisations must have some connection to LEAP either as an existing network partner or through alignment with the Hub’s vision
